The chassis was an aluminum monocoque with magnesium parts and carbon fiber panels. It had double action suspension, direct action on the front axle and articulated arms on the rear axle. It carried 17-inch magnesium wheels front and 19 inches behind and 14-inch brembo wheels
In 1988, the car had an engine named M117 that was a double turbo 5 liters, V8, with semi-bearing function, based on the 500SL block. The two valves per cylinder were driven by a single overhead camshaft with chain drive. In the qualifying specifications, the supercharging pressure was 1.2 bar and the power was 800 hp at 7000 rpm. The torque curve was very flat between 3000-8000 rpm, which gave the Sauber C9 a great advantage at the exit of the corners. The total weight was 865 kg.
This Kouros Racing Team was launched in 1987 by Johnny Dumfries, Chip Ganassi and Mike Thackwell.
