For the second consecutive year, the Porsche 961 made its appearance at Le Mans under official colors. Quipo with René Metge to head hopes to do as well as last year, but adverse weather conditions long-awaited occur and the car has no chance to develop their potential, which remains well below the 1Mazda 757 participated in the same category .

Porsche won Le Mans with the Porsche 962 C Hans Stuck, Derek Bell and Al Holbert, but the 961 # 203 did not finish the race. It caught fire after going off the road.
