Decoration for the Nissan R90CK of the team From-A Racing participant in the 1991 JSPC with the number 27 piloted by V. Weidler, A.Nakaya

For the 1989 season, instead of relying on chassis built by March, Nissan developed the r89c model along with Lola. The chassis was a kevlar and carbon fiber mono-chassis with the new 3.5-liter Nissan Vrh35 turbo v8 3.5-liter engine dohc engine that was mounted on a structure to improve chassis rigidity, delivering up to 950 hp.

Despite the efforts of Nissan, the 1989 championship was quite unsuccessful, as their cars lacked reliability and speed. The nissan could only score in three races and finished the season in the fifth place in the team championship.

In the 24 hours of Le Mans 1989 Nissan entered 3 cars, none of which finished the race. The car number 23 was driven by Hashemi, Hoshino and Suzuki. Once again Nissan chose the number 23 for one of their cars. The reason for this choice is that 23 in Japanese is pronounced Ni San. That's the reason why Nisan usually inscribes their cars with the number 23.

For 1990, the R89C was entered by Nissan for the first race of the World Championship until it was replaced by both the R90CK and R90CP. 2 R89Cs were delivered to private teams, in charge of Courage Compétition finished 22nd in the 1990 edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans with an ex factory R89C (chassis 01). The chassis n ° 03 was modified by the equipment Le Mans happening to be denominated R90V. He ran the JSPC championship getting a best result a sixth place before being retired. He also raced at Le Mans in 1990, retiring at about 7.00.

The R89C with chassis02 was rebuilt as an R90CP for use by Nismo at Le Mans and at the Sport-Prototype Championship in Japan.
