The production of the McLaren F1 GTR, led by former Formula 1 engineer Gordon Murray, began in 1992 and ended in 1998. At that time it was the fastest car ever built.

The F1 GTR competed in Le Mans for the first time in 1995, being the absolute winner, placing 5 cars on the finish line in first, third, fourth, fifth and 13th positions

The car had a monocoque carbon fiber chassis and a V12 engine from BMW 5990 cc.

In 1997, the F1 GTR was modified to the long tail version. The number 27 ran in Donington, piloted by Chris Goodwin and Gary Ayles.
